Military History Conference in Ottawa 14-17 April

Last week the Canadian War Museum (CWM) hosted the 2016 conference of the Society for Military History (SMH) the world’s largest body of military historians. Ten members of the History Department (four of them ex Cadets) presented papers ranging from topics on military education to the Ottoman Empire to the post war RCAF and more; additionally there were many alumni, both former cadets and War Studies grads, in attendance. But the RMC presence was most obvious thanks to four cadets, all history majors, who attended the conference at the invitation of the War Museum. While they helped out with some ‘admin’ tasks including leading tours to Parliament, the Diefenbunker and the Air and Space Muesum they also attended many interesting presentations from renowned world class historians.

Faculty Dinner at the SSM

Article and photos by Robert Paquet

The annual RMCC Faculty Dinner was held at the SSM on April 20th with the 140th anniversary of the College in mind. Faculty members and their guests, the Principal, Dr. Harry Kowal, the Cmdt, BGen Sean Friday, and representatives from CMR St-Jean and the Canadian Forces College attended a very entertaining evening. Once again this year, Dr. Billy Allan was the MC and proved to be a pro, while OCdt Couillard (26926) delighted the crowd on the piano. The attendees also took part in a trivia game on the history of the College and received numerous prizes. The event’s organizers – Ms. Martine Thivierge-Bournival and Ms. Sandra Gauthier from Language Centre – would like to thank all Faculty members who accepted the invitation, the SSM staff, and the Principal’s office – especially LCol (Ret’d) Larry Paziuk – for their help with the planning of this very pleasant evening.
